Soft lambskin is loved for its tactile surface and elegant drape, but that same softness makes owners anxious about scratches, colour transfer and moisture. The safest care routine is usually conservative: protect the finish, minimize friction and know when to stop experimenting at home.
Start with prevention, not products
CHANEL advises owners not to overfill a handbag, because repeated pressure can distort its lines. Light leather should also be kept away from dark fabrics for prolonged periods, since dye can migrate in either direction. Sunlight, artificial light and humidity matter too. A bag left near a bright window or radiator may age unevenly even when it is rarely carried.
Storage should support the shape without forcing it. Wrap chains or straps in clean tissue so hardware does not press into the leather, then keep the bag upright in its original pouch in a ventilated space. Avoid sealing leather inside plastic or compressing it beneath other bags.
What to do about a light surface mark
For lambskin, CHANEL’s official guidance suggests a very gentle circular motion to reduce the appearance of a light surface mark. Use only a clean, soft cloth and almost no pressure. This is not a method for ink, grease, deep scratches or colour loss. If a bag becomes wet, blot the area carefully with an absorbent, non-pilling cloth and let it dry naturally away from direct heat.
Avoid household leather creams, waxes, waterproofing sprays, alcohol wipes and improvised stain removers. A product that works on shoes or furniture can alter the finish of luxury handbag leather permanently. Test nothing on a visible area.
When professional assessment is the better choice
Stop home care when you see lifting colour, a deep cut, sticky residue, warped structure, mould, damaged stitching or hardware pulling away from leather. Photograph the condition, note how the damage occurred and contact a CHANEL boutique or qualified leather specialist before authorizing work. Ask what will be cleaned, recoloured, replaced or refinished—and whether the treatment can be reversed.
